Until the mid-20th century, all ukulele strings were made of gut, a natural material derived from animal intestines. This type of natural strings, used for thousands of years, combined promptness of attack and excellent performance. Although natural gut material has its advantages for music instrument strings, giving a great sound and a great feel, it also has its disadvantages: these strings generally cost more than synthetic strings and don't last as long.
Although Aquila Strings still makes natural gut strings, a fundamental aim of the research there was to design a new synthetic product having the same acoustic properties as gut but without its typical defects (high cost, short lifetime and high instability under moisture changes).
The new Nylgut® strings from Aquila have all the good qualities of natural gut strings without the defects. This material features include promptness of attack, excellent performance and a truly remarkable stability of intonation under moisture changes.
