Wearable Art: How to Make a Stylish Guitar Pick Necklace
Many people use guitar picks to make necklaces, bracelets and other jewelry. The different colors and shapes are a great fashion accent. But what if you want to be able to use the pick(s) in a pinch? You are a musician, after all, and you shouldn’t have to choose between neat jewelry and a functional pick.
This guide will walk you through making a cool guitar pick necklace that looks awesome and ensures you always have a pick handy. It’s a great DIY gift as well for a friend, sibling or partner who is constantly losing track of picks. (And isn’t that all of us?)
Tools and Materials
- Guitar pick(s)
- A necklace cord or chain (string, leather, etc.) with a clasp (optional)
- A lighter and needle or a drill with a 2mm bit
- Accent beads and gems
- 6mm jump rings
- Lobster clasp
- Scissors or wire cutters
- Needle-nose pliers
- Tape measure
- Protective surface (such as a cutting board or old phone book)
Note it’s perfectly okay to have multiple picks on your necklace. You can even put multiple picks on the same jump ring. For simplicity, the instructions below will describe making a necklace with a single pick; feel free to use your creativity from there.
How to Design a Guitar Pick Necklace
1. Pierce a hole near the top of the pick. You can do so by A) heating the pick with the lighter to soften the material and then pushing the needle through it, or B) placing the pick on the protective surface and then drilling a hole. Be sure to wipe away any residue if you’re drilling.
2. Insert one jump ring through the hole. Use the needle-nose pliers to open the jump ring by twisting the ends and then pinch the ring shut after it’s on the pick.
3. Attach another jump ring to the ring end of your lobster clasp using the same method.
4. Weave the lobster clasp onto your necklace cord and attach the pick using the fastener end. Note: You can also place the pick directly on the necklace cord using the original jump ring, but this will make it much harder to get the pick off when you need it.
5. Thread on any accent beads and gems that you want to add.
6. Measure your necklace cord and cut it to the length you want using scissors or wire cutters. (A length of 16-20 inches is good in most cases.) If you are planning to knot the ends, leave some extra material to tie them.
7. Knot the ends of the cord together or attach the closure. This involves adding a jump ring to one end and a clasp to the other just like with the guitar pick.
