About Wolfgang Van Halen

When your father and uncle are rock legends, it can be hard to live up to their standard — but Wolfgang Van Halen has done an admirable job. The son of Eddie and the nephew of Alex, Wolfgang joined Van Halen as the bassist in 2007 at the age of 16, playing with them until 2020 when Eddie died and the band dissolved.

That’s only part of the story, though. Wolfgang started his musical career at age nine playing the drums — and despite having a famous drummer as an uncle, he mainly taught himself. Along with playing in Van Halen, he also spent four years with the heavy metal band Tremonti. Since Van Halen ended, Wolfgang has released two albums as Mammoth WVH, a solo venture where he plays every instrument: guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and vocals. Suffice it to say he has the musical knack.

What Guitar Strings Does Wolfgang Van Halen Play?

While his father Eddie switched string brands multiple times, Wolfgang Van Halen is an Ernie Ball man through and through. He rotates between three sets of guitar strings depending on what part he’s playing. Ernie Ball M-Steel Slinky Skinny Top Heavy Bottom Guitar Strings let him play booming rhythm and soaring leads with amazing output thanks to a special cobalt wrap alloy and maraging steel core. A set of Ernie Ball Super Slinky Electric Guitar Strings offers the lead tone of the classic hard rock scene. And when Wolfgang needs rugged medium gauge strings for busy touring schedules, he turns to Ernie Ball Cobalt Regular Slinky Electric Guitar Strings.
